God Leaves the Light On for Us

March 10, 2014

Lent Day 5 Monday, March 10

How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Psalm 36:7-9

Steadfast love is a beautiful word in Hebrew, hesed, incorporating God’s faithful, merciful, pursuing, covenantal kindness.

These verses are a picture of God’s heart of hospitality. Hospitality is a one of the hidden arts—devalued or not often practiced in our no-margin lives. It carries the idea of creating space for others. Think of God creating space for you (through the Cross of Christ) and welcoming you home. He leaves the “light on” to draw us to His beautiful refuge.

Ponder: Picture God’s home filled with abundance of feasting, delight, life and light. Have you seen the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor 4:6)? Have you taken refuge in God’s steadfast love, his “hesed?”

Praise: You are the fountain of life, in your light we see light.
